Spencer Academies Trust bids farewell to Tanya Flinders, who retires after nearly 30 years of service to our schools

After a lifelong career dedicated to supporting school communities through education catering, Tanya Flinders, Trust Catering Operations Manager, is retiring and bidding farewell to our schools.
Tanya has played a pivotal role in overseeing and developing catering services across the Trust, ensuring thousands of students received nutritious, high-quality meals every day. Her leadership and commitment have left a lasting impact on our schools, staff, and pupils alike. We sat down with Tanya as she reflected on her journey, the joys and challenges of her role, and what lies ahead in retirement…
How did your journey into catering begin, and what led you to focus on the education sector?
I began my journey in education catering as an apprentice with NCC in 1975. I attended Clarendon College on day release for four years, and after completing my training, I was given responsibility for my own kitchen. From there, I worked my way up through the ranks.
What has fueled your passion for education catering throughout the years?
I’ve always loved working in this sector. It’s incredibly rewarding to provide children with a balanced, nutritious meal each day. I also really enjoy talking to the students, hearing their likes and dislikes about food—plus, they’re always full of funny stories and anecdotes.
What has been the most rewarding part of working within the Spencer Academies Trust?
Taking on the role of Catering Operations Manager has been a highlight. I’ve especially enjoyed working with the Relish catering system and its up-to-date technology. It’s been rewarding to source reliable suppliers who continue to deliver excellent quality food at competitive prices.
What advice would you give to someone just starting a career in education catering today?
Embrace the culture. It’s hard work, but it’s incredibly rewarding.
As you prepare for retirement, what are you most excited about in this next chapter?
Travel - it’s a real passion of mine. Health permitting, I’m looking forward to many more years of adventures in our motorhome.
What do you think you’ll miss the most about working in schools and with your team?
I’ll definitely miss the students, and also my long-time colleague Nicky - my partner in crime for many years. She’s been a tremendous support from the beginning, and I’m leaving my post in her very capable hands.
If you could reflect on your career in a few sentences, how would you sum it up?
I wouldn’t change a thing - I’ve loved every part of the journey, through all the ups and downs. I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible catering staff who are passionate about their work, as well as dedicated colleagues across the wider SAT community.
We thank Tanya for her decades of service and wish her all the very best as she sets off on her next adventure!
