Sunnyside Spencer becomes a J9 Safe Space School

A J9 Safe Space is a designated, publicly accessible location where someone experiencing domestic abuse can safely seek information, use a telephone to call for help and be discreetly signposted towards specialist support.

As a J9 Safe Space, members of staff at Sunnyside Spencer Academy have undertaken specific training to help them recognise the signs of domestic abuse and respond appropriately, sensitively and without judgement. The training takes around an hour and is completely free, with promotional materials also provided free of charge.

For Sunnyside Spencer Academy, becoming a J9 Safe Space is an important step in demonstrating their commitment to the wellbeing and safety of their whole school community. They want everyone who comes through their doors to know that there is a safe, supportive environment where they can be heard and directed towards the help they may need.

Pastoral, Safeguarding and Attendance Manager, Donna Blore, said: “Sometimes, knowing there is a safe place can make all the difference. J9 Safe Place training empowers organisations and communities to recognise the signs of domestic abuse and provide a safe, supportive space where someone can seek help. Together, we can make sure no one feels alone and be that safe place someone needs.”

Principal at Sunnyside Spencer Academy, Sallyann Mitchell added: “‘We believe every person deserves to feel safe, supported, and listened to, that is why we are incredibly proud to become an official J9 Safe Place.”
