Two teams from Derby Moor Spencer Academy compete as finalists in Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Competition

A team of three Year 8 students were nominated for a special award, and the team of four Year 10 students were runners up for the Intermediate Science Award.

Seven students in two teams represented Derby Moor Spencer Academy at this year’s Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Competition, with one team earning a nomination for the Royal Air Force Teamwork special award and the other winning runner up for the Intermediate Science Award.

Three Year 8 students earned the special award nomination through their project Reducing Vehicle Carbon Emissions. Their project centred around a component design for vehicle exhaust systems which would capture and filter the emitted carbon dioxide. This would then be stored and used to generate electricity.

Four students in Year 10 collaborated on their project called Helping with Early Stages of Dementia. They designed a website for both individuals with dementia and their carers to offer both practical and emotional support. Features include timed reminders, text-to-speech (and vice versa) capabilities, AI trainers for physio exercises and memory-assisting games and photographs. They also aim to introduce a feature connecting carers with local charities to receive advice and support. Their project was the runner up for the Intermediate Science Award.

The teams began work on these projects back in October during weekly STEM Club meetings. They were free to choose a topic based on their individual interests and benefitted from the guidance, mentorship and support of Derby Moor Spencer Academy’s dedicated staff. Their detailed and creative solutions, as well as their tireless work ethic, exemplify Derby Moor’s and the Trust’s values of aspiration and the strength of working together within a community.

Mohammad Usman, who worked closely with both teams, said, “We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to each and every one of the students who has reached this remarkable milestone. Their accomplishments have made us incredibly proud, and we are confident that they will continue to excel. Their talent, passion and determination have set them apart, and we have no doubt that they will continue to represent our institution with the utmost distinction.”
