Inkersall Spencer Academy celebrates successful Ofsted inspection

The report paints a picture of a happy and caring school where pupils enjoy learning, feel safe and are supported to succeed. Inspectors described Inkersall Spencer Academy as "a happy and very nurturing school", recognising the positive relationships that underpin daily life across the academy. Pupils arrive each morning to a warm welcome from staff, complete with a breakfast snack and drink, helping them settle quickly and feel ready to learn.

Relationships were identified as a key strength throughout the school. Inspectors found that pupils feel secure because of the caring relationships they have with staff, while parents praised the way staff "go above and beyond" to support children and their families. Pupils told inspectors they understand the school's high expectations through the 'Inkersall Way' and know that adults will quickly resolve any worries or concerns.

Behaviour and attendance were also recognised positively. Leaders were praised for maintaining a calm, safe and purposeful environment where pupils behave well, show positive attitudes to learning and treat one another with kindness and respect. The report highlighted the school's effective work to promote attendance, noting that absence rates are typically lower than national averages thanks to the bespoke support provided to pupils and families.

The inspection recognised the academy's ambitious curriculum and the improvements leaders have made in reading, writing and mathematics. Inspectors found that pupils achieve well over time and are well prepared for the next stage of their education. Leaders were praised for strengthening the mathematics and writing curriculum, while effective phonics teaching ensures children develop into fluent readers. The report also highlighted the strong foundations established in the early years, where children benefit from thoughtfully planned learning experiences, nurturing relationships and responsive teaching that builds confidence, independence and communication skills.

Inkersall Spencer Academy's commitment to inclusion was another significant strength recognised by inspectors. The report highlighted how leaders have strengthened systems to support the increasing number of vulnerable pupils, ensuring children receive the right help at the right time. Staff work closely with families, external agencies and specialist professionals to understand pupils' needs and remove barriers to learning. Inspectors also praised the school's effective use of additional funding to ensure disadvantaged pupils and those known to social care achieve and thrive alongside their peers.

The school's extensive personal development programme was celebrated for helping pupils develop confidence, resilience and ambition beyond the classroom. From residential visits and careers week to sports, gardening, music and arts clubs, pupils benefit from a wide range of opportunities to discover new talents and broaden their horizons. Inspectors also recognised the school's comprehensive pastoral support, describing it as a particular strength, while noting that pupils understand how to stay physically and mentally healthy, keep themselves safe online and contribute positively to their community.

Safeguarding was recognised as highly effective throughout the academy. Inspectors found that leaders have established an open culture in which safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, ensuring concerns are identified quickly and managed appropriately so that pupils feel safe and well supported.

The report also praised the strength of leadership across the academy. Inspectors recognised leaders' deep understanding of the local community and their determination to overcome barriers to learning and wellbeing. Staff were found to share fully in the school's vision, benefiting from carefully planned professional development while feeling supported with their workload and wellbeing. Governance was also highlighted positively, with governors working closely alongside trust leaders to monitor improvements and ensure the school remains at the heart of the Inkersall community.

The report also identified areas for further development, including continuing to strengthen the consistency of teaching by ensuring pupils' understanding is checked carefully during lessons and further refining support for some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities. Inspectors recognised that leaders are already aware of these priorities and have appropriate plans in place to address them.
