Heanor Gate Spencer Academy celebrates opening of its new state-of-the-art building
Heanor Gate Spencer Academy marked a major milestone last week with the official opening of its brand-new, state-of-the-art school building - an ambitious development set to transform learning experiences for current and future students. The school welcomed staff, leaders from the Spencer Academies Trust, local dignitaries, and a small group of student representatives to a special open event held on Friday, celebrating the culmination of a project many years in the making. The full building opened to all students on Monday 24th, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the academy.
Principal, Matt Jones, shared his pride and excitement as the new facility was unveiled, describing the opening as a landmark moment in the academy’s ongoing commitment to excellence - “This milestone represents far more than the completion of a construction project - it marks a significant step forward in our commitment to providing an inspiring, modern, and supportive environment for every student who walks through our doors.”
Designed to enhance learning and promote collaboration, the new building boasts modern classrooms, specialist digital facilities, and flexible communal spaces. Every aspect has been created with students’ academic progress, creativity, and wellbeing in mind.
The opening event was attended by student representatives, staff members, and leaders from the Spencer Academies Trust, along with special guests, Labour MP, Linsey Farnsworth and Amber Valley Borough Councillor, Chris Emmas-Williams. Guests toured the new spaces and joined in the celebration as the ribbon was cut.
“It was a joy to see their enthusiasm and excitement as the building was unveiled,” said Mr Jones, who also expressed gratitude to those who played key roles in the project’s development. He thanked staff, the wider Trust, architects Thinking Buildings, and Bailey’s Construction for their expertise and dedication throughout the process.
The new facility represents a significant investment in the future of young people in the community - one that aligns closely with the academy’s strong sense of identity, academic ambition, and collaborative values.
