Heanor Gate Spencer Academy students raise £400 for local charity
Students in Year 7 took initiative to gather clothes and raise funds to donate to Salcare, a local charity that provides a range of support to the community.
Motivated by the school value of unity, Year 7 students at Heanor Gate Spencer Academy took initiative to raise £400 to donate to Salcare.
The young people were keen to find an organisation that is central in their local community and settled on Salcare, which provides both practical resources and support for survivors of domestic abuse in the wider area around Heanor. They began with a drive to collect coats, hats and gloves to give to homeless and vulnerable people, which was a great success.
In addition, the students hosted several bake sales with cakes, Easter cards and keyrings for sale. They ran the entire operation, from producing the goods to manning the stall. All in all, they raised £400 to donate to Salcare.
“I think it’s important to support our local community, especially those without much money or food,” said one student of their motivation to take on the project. Another young person said, “No-one deserves to go hungry, so I just wanted to try and help them.”
Mrs Andre at Salcare said, “The money will provide over 800 food parcels to help our local community. We are so grateful to Heanor Gate for this donation as we are a charitable organisation. The money will make such a difference in so many lives. Thank you so much Year 7!”
Matt Jones, principal at Heanor Gate, said, “We are enormously proud of these students for the initiative, motivation and generosity they’ve shown. Every step of this fundraiser, from its inception to the final cheque, was entirely thanks to their hard work. We couldn’t ask for a better example of our school values and are honoured to count them among Team Heanor.”
