Fairfield Spencer Academy pupils lead Drumba session for Nottinghamshire Spencer Academies
Roughly 20 students from six Spencer primary academies participated in an exciting Drumba music/workout session led by three of Fairfield’s pupil Drumba instructors.
More than 20 students from Chetwynd Spencer Academy, Glenbrook Spencer Academy, Millside Spencer Academy, Portland Spencer Academy, Rosecliffe Spencer Academy and Sunnyside Spencer Academy came to Fairfield Spencer Academy to participate in a pupil-led Drumba session, which combines music and movement in an engaging exercise.
Drumba instructors Charlie, Sophia and Taha led their peers through six songs and a Simon Says-esque game with confidence and a lot of energy. They were selected to be instructors based on an application process and trained by Drumba instructors; they continue to work together on choreography out of school building up their repertoire of songs.
Some of the children experienced Drumba for the very first time, while others have enjoyed it as a regular part of their curriculum. At Sunnyside Spencer Academy, for example, Years 3–6 participate in a session every Wednesday, while pupils in Years 1 and 2 are rewarded for exceptional behaviour with Drumba tickets to join a session. Vice Principal Verity Lee described it as “the core of the school.”
The visiting pupils began with varying degrees of enthusiasm, but under the leadership of Charlie, Sophia and Taha the entire room was completely engaged by the end of the session. They enjoyed the music and novelty of the day, and a young man from Millside Spencer Academy said, “I liked the part where we played the game because I won.”
In addition to providing fun, fitness and friendly competition to all participants, Drumba offers the instructors important opportunities for growth and development. When asked what their favourite part of being a Drumba instructor was, all three of them emphatically agreed it was being a leader.
