Spencer Academies Trust celebrate Two Teaching Assistants honoured at 10 Downing Street

Two members of staff from Spencer Academies Trust were honoured at a prestigious Public Sector Reception at 10 Downing Street on Tuesday 1st July 2025.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted a reception to thank public sector workers in the garden of 10 Downing Street.
Bianca Barlow, from Sunnyside Spencer Academy, and David Bennett, from Derby Moor Spencer Academy, were invited to the event, in recognition of their exceptional service and dedication to the education sector. The reception brought together around 200 public sector professionals from across the UK - including representatives from the NHS, education, and emergency services - to celebrate those who embody the spirit of public service.
Sir Keir Starmer praised guests for “putting other people first”, a value both Bianca and David exemplify in their daily work supporting children and young people.
Bianca Barlow, Teaching Assistant at Sunnyside Spencer Academy, is known for her commitment, warmth, and unwavering dedication to the children of Sunnyside. Reflecting on the honour, she said: “Being recognised in this way means so much. I absolutely love my job, and everything I do is for the children. It was an incredible experience to meet others who work across public services, to share stories, and to feel appreciated at the highest level.”
Bianca spent the evening speaking with colleagues from other sectors in the gardens of Number 10, culminating in a powerful speech by the Prime Minister, which can be seen here.
Laurie Baczynski, Principal of Sunnyside Spencer Academy at the time of the nomination, commented: “Bianca Barlow is a truly wonderful teaching assistant who consistently goes above and beyond for both the children and the staff. As part of the Sunnyside Spencer team, her warmth, dedication, and unwavering support make a lasting difference every single day. Whether she’s offering encouragement to a child who needs a boost or stepping in to support a colleague without hesitation, Bianca does it all with grace and positivity. She brings energy, kindness, and a can-do attitude to everything she does - the children and staff are very lucky to have her.”
Verity Lee, Vice Principal at Sunnyside Spencer, added: “Bianca is an exceptional teaching assistant whose dedication and skill make a profound impact across our school. Her dedication and support for our Year 6 pupils consistently helps them achieve above age-related expectations in their SATs. She goes above and beyond in everything she does and is a truly valued member of our team. We are so proud that Bianca has received the recognition of everything we already knew.”
David Bennett, Specialist Teaching Assistant at Derby Moor Spencer Academy, also attended the reception after being nominated in recognition of his work with students with complex needs. In his reflection on the event, he said: “I always aim to be the best I can be as a teaching assistant and to do the best for students and colleagues. Having that affirmed by recognition at the highest level is heartening and inspires me to do more. However, the students I support remain the greatest source of inspiration – seeing them overcome challenges to gain confidence, learn, and achieve is the real reward. So, to those I’ve supported – to all of you – thank you.”
David’s influence at Derby Moor extends well beyond the classroom. He is a key figure in delivering the school’s Aspiration value – supporting students in realising their potential through tailored interventions, careers guidance, and mentoring.
Aaron Brown, Director of Inclusion at Derby Moor Spencer, commented: “David displays consistent diligence and genuine care for students. He supports a diverse range of young people with both compassion and understanding, and sets a high standard for others through his professionalism.”
Laura McGuinn, SENCo at Derby Moor Spencer, added: “David embodies the very best of what it means to support and inspire young people. Whether leading our self-advocacy intervention, coordinating careers support, mentoring apprentices or volunteering for extra-curricular opportunities, David ensures students are given every chance to thrive – socially, emotionally, and academically.”
The Spencer Academies Trust is incredibly proud of both Bianca and David for representing their schools and the wider trust with such dedication.
